Focus Group
I did a focus group of 7 girls and 3 boys from Year 12 at Wellington School (16-17 years) to get a general idea of what the audience like/don't like to see within Pop music videos. I asked the following questions;
1) When you think of a Pop Music Video, what comes into mind? Focal point on the artist, at least 2/3 settings, performance (majorly the artist at the front with back up dancers)
2) What is your favourite music genre? 60% said Pop, 20% said R&B, 20% said UK garage/grime
3) (Asked to the people who said Pop) Why do you like Pop music? Its played everywhere [radio stations] so I have just got use to listening to it all the time & learned to love it, the majority of it is upbeat and positive, its relatable
4) What are your favourite music videos & why? (most common answers) Ariana Grande - thank u, next because its recreating a popular movie [Mean Girls] & its humorous, Camilla Cabello - Havana because its also humorous & is split between narrative and a performance of her, Anne Marie - FRIENDS because its relatable & humorous, Stormzy - Vossi Bop because the way its filmed [camera angles/movements] is awesome
5) Do you prefer a performance based pop music video or narrative based or a mixture? 50% said just Performance, 40% said a mixture & 10% said just Narrative
6) Listen to Zara Larson - Aint My Fault and what do you think its about? A girl giving in to a boy because he is really good looking
7) If you were making a music video from this song, what ideas/scenes would you use? Partying/Dancing, A new couple that are into each other, breakups, focus on women/female power? - relatable teen scenarios
